Developing a web and mobile safety platform for construction sites
Ohutu needed to rapidly develop a suite of applications to bring its new digital health and safety assistant to market for construction workers across the UK.
Ohutu, whose name means 'safe' in Estonian, is a UK-based construction technology start-up founded in 2018. Its mission is to simplify and improve how construction teams manage health and safety processes across projects.
The company’s platform replaces complex paper-based systems with a digital solution that allows site managers and supervisors to oversee safety documentation, risk assessments and compliance tasks from a single system.
Health and safety management in construction often involves large volumes of paperwork, including risk assessments, method statements and construction phase plans. Managing these documents across multiple sites can be time-consuming and difficult to coordinate.
Ohutu set out to create a digital platform that would simplify this process. By combining a central web application with mobile apps for site supervisors, the system enables teams to manage safety documentation and compliance tasks more efficiently.
OWA has worked with Ohutu since its founding in 2018, supporting the development of the platform while also providing secure hosting, system monitoring and ongoing technical support.
As an early-stage start-up preparing to launch its first product, Ohutu needed to move quickly from concept to a working system ready for real users. The platform had to support both desktop and mobile environments while providing a clear, intuitive experience for construction professionals working in busy site conditions.
At the same time, the system needed to handle complex workflows relating to health and safety documentation and project management.
- Launch a new health and safety platform within tight timescales
- Develop a central web application for managing multiple projects
- Create mobile apps for supervisors working on construction sites
- Replace paper-based safety processes with digital workflows
- Ensure the system was ready for both subscribers and app stores
Delivering the platform required a flexible and collaborative approach to design, development and testing.
OWA partnered closely with Ohutu to transform an early-stage concept into a fully functioning digital platform. Early work focused on understanding how construction teams manage safety processes and translating these workflows into intuitive digital tools.
A central web application was developed to allow managers to oversee health and safety documentation across multiple projects. Alongside this, mobile apps for iOS and Android were created to enable supervisors on site to access, update and manage safety information directly from their devices.
The system supports the creation and management of key documents such as method statements, risk assessments and construction phase plans. By integrating the mobile apps with the central platform, site teams can maintain accurate records and manage compliance activities while working on location.
The platform has helped Ohutu bring an innovative construction safety product to market:
- Digital platform replacing complex paper-based safety processes
- Integrated web application and mobile apps for site teams
- Streamlined management of risk assessments and method statements
- Flexible system supporting multiple construction projects
- Ongoing development, hosting and technical support
Start-ups and organisations launching new digital products often need to move quickly from concept to a market-ready platform. A collaborative development approach helps translate ideas into practical applications while ensuring systems are robust and scalable.
- Develop web and mobile platforms for new digital products
- Translate operational workflows into practical software tools
- Launch integrated web and mobile applications efficiently
- Create scalable platforms that evolve with your business
- Provide hosting, monitoring and ongoing technical support
